Hey everyone. Interesting to read all your comments. I notice that a lot of the English Kempsters seem to be from the Aylesbury/Tring area (Bucks/Herts, England). This is interesting as as far back as I know my family comes from Manchester, England, but my parents and I have lived in the Aylesbury area since I was young. It seems interesting to me that we moved to an area with so many Kempsters, and in fact I had noticed before that there were many more in the 'phone book here than in Manchester!!!

Dear cousin David. As I continue to refer back (again and again) to the photo you have published under Reunion 2000 (In Memorium), I am reminded how much gratitude I feel for the effort and skill you have poured into this web site. My Dad (Alan Arthur, far right of the photo) felt such pride in his brothers and the entire Kempster tribe for his entire life. Your creation of this web site has been the finest tribute he could have asked for. On his behalf as well as my own behalf ... thanks 'Cousin'.

It is extremely facinating visiting your site. Alas, i can't offer much by way of information. I do know that my father(John) was born in Hemel Hempstead, a few miles from Tring, Aylesbury, etc and his father was called Albert who was married to Lillian. Albert had a brother called Joseph but i do not know much more than that. I did attend a wedding some years back and much to my surprise the bride's mother was also a Kempster and at the reception was 15 to 20 Kempsters all from the Tring area. I briefly spoke to them and the common link between us was that they have all suffered with bad eyesight as they have got older with many 'almost' blind. This too,is similar to my own branch of the family. My Grandfather was blind, both my own father and his brothers are almost blind. I wonder if this problem has existed elsewhere?
I look forward to seeing how the website progresses and thank you for the opportunity to add my own little piece of the 'jigsaw'

I'm not the one from Manchester, UK ... nice to know i'm not the only Gary K in England though ... What a find this site is ... I never realised just how many of us grace this small blue marble of a planet :o)

I know I have Kempster relatives out in Oz, Perth in particular.

My late grandmother was Ella Kempster, who brought up both my Father, John Thomas and my late Uncle David in the east end of Newcastle. I have two brothers, Anthony and Paul Mark.

Keep up the good work DK :o)

Hi Dave, remember me. I am visiting my parents in North Wales at the moment and have some additional info. to share. My father, Philip Leslie Kempster was born to Joseph Daniel and Daisy Kempster (formally West) in Tring, Hertfordshire. Joseph Daniel's parents were Harry and Mary Kempster, from the same area. My mother, Betty Sylvia Kempster was born in Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire to James Arthur from Wingrave and Annie Kempster (formally Taylor). James' parents were Frank and Elizabeth Kempster (formally Oakley), also from Wingrave. As you can see, this makes me a pure bred Kempster as my parents are distant cousins! Am I the only one? I would love to hear from any relatives who recognise the names above.
P.S The computer course is going well, thanks once again for your help!

Hi there - I'm a Kempster that originates from Aylesbury in Bucks (England), although I currently live in North West London. My Dad's one of seven Kempster's that come from the Tring area, most of whom still live in the area. My Grandfather's name was Arthur and I know he had sisters called Ethel & Edie and a brother who's name I can't remember. Keep up the good work!

Kempsters seem to me much rarer in the U.S. I seem to be the first to write from a family of Kempsters based in and around Sacramento, California. My grandfather was Roy Kempster; I'm not sure what his father's name was. P.S. I have a cousin named David.

I am searching for the descendants of William L Kempster born 1874 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. In the early 1900's he left England, possibly bound for Australia or South Africa, but as the family never heard from him again, who knows? His father was David Kempster and his mother was Mary Ann (Strapp). He had a sister Alice S Kempster and four brothers: Arthur F, Frederick Ernest, Amos A and Sidney, all born in Leighton Buzzard. Does this family of Kempsters ring any bells with anyone out there?

What a great find your Website is! I am truly impressed. The Kempster name seems through history to be attached to the firstname David (e.g My grandfather, father,)which I am sure you have noticed. As an aside you might be interested to note that my grandfather was a paratrooper at the famous WWII battle of Pegasus bridge, and soon after lost his life. I've always wondered if we have any other notable Kempster stories. All the Best for the Future! David Thomas Kempster (

Hello, Dave Kempster. It's strange to see so many Kempster's names from different parts of the world. My father's name was Russell Lloyd and his father(my grandfather) was Wallace Russell. They were from Hillsdale,Ill. Wallace had two brothers and from what I know, they migrated from somewhere in England. That's about as far back as I know. You have a very nice web site. Hello, although I currently live in Greenwich,London, I am from the small South African Kempster clan. My grandfather was Henry Edwin Kempster. He had two brothers,Vyvyan and Zarney plus two sisters, Jessie(Baustred) and Vi(Spec). Their father immigrated from the Abergavenny area of Wales under the 1820 Settler scheme to Grahamstown. Unfortunately that is all I currently know, but am keen to find out more.

Ran across this site by accident but I am related to Kempsters. My Grandmother was Florence Kempster. Don't know too much about her. She past away when I was only 3 or 4 years old. That would have been in 1966 or 67'. She came from England (don't know what year) I know she had a brother named Bob Kempster and possibly had a brother named Jack. Does any of these names fit?

I was just searching for domain names when I came across this one. It seems strange to see another David Kempster out there but I can see from your Guest Book that we are not alone. The crest looks great. Can we use it on letterheads like the Queen!!!? I don't know much about the lineage of the Kempster branch of our family due to divorce but if any one knows anything about the Kempsters from the Yorkshire area I would like to know. Keep in touch...

Hi Dave, from another Dave Kempster. I found you via Janet's Guestbook along with a few other Kempsters. Good to see that my hunch about the surname meaning 'comber of wool' was correct, but didn't know that we had a coat of arms. The guest book caught my eye, as I live in Westerham, Kent, UK which was General Wolfe's home (Quebec House), and I know that someone on your site is interested in him - anything I can do to help let me know. My family come from Aston Clinton, Tring & Aylesbury area of Buckinghamshire, UK. My grandfathers name is Herbert and his fathers name was Herbert before that. I have started work on a very loose family tree and can let you know more in the future. I think one or two relatives went to Canada, so will try to highlight those. Good to find you, have now bookmarked the site. Hello to everyone else!

Since this is a Canadian based site, I thought I would give you what information (a little scant)I have on the Kempster's from my family that went to Canada. My Great Uncle Albert Kempster son of Arthur William Kempster emigrated to Canada around the turn of the century. I am told he spent some time working in the gold mines and then joined the Mounties. He had two sisters, Mabel and Ethel and two brothers Arthur William (my Grandfather) and Leonard. Leonard's son Lesley also emigrated to Canada and I believe he may have had a son called John. I am told they may have been in the Vancouver area. Does any of this ring any bells out there?

Yes there was a Kempster involved in St Pauls Cathederal, and if my memory serves me correctly he designed the stairs leading to the whispering gallery. My family is also from South London, and I am just starting to make enquires among living relatives. With regard to General Woolf, I'm not sure of the link, but his home was in Westerham in Kent, England, and is open to the public on occasions.

Hi David, I too was not aware there were so many Kempster. I was born in Scotland, so was my father, his father??? a mistery....I have only spoken with two other in Ajax and one that my sister met at Mcmaster University. Apparently "Coran" was a popular first name in her family. Maybe you should post where the coat of arms came from, then we all wouldnt't ask the same looking forward to seeing more.....Stephen

I also did not know there were so many Kempster's about!! I'm afraid that I have little to add as I really don't know much more than the fact that my father was born in England (near London, I believe) in 1909 and came to Ontario when he was 13 or 15 yrs old to work on farms in the Stittsville area of Ontario. If this rings any bells with anyone in the Ottawa area please let me know. Meanwhile keep up the good work! Regards, Ross

Hey, I didn't know there were so many other Kempsters, it's not a common name. It'd be nice to hear from others around the world. I don't know if you've heard of a company called I think they're based in Canada actually. They provide a service of renting out e-mail addresses with various domain names, such as family names. Before you ask, no I don't work for them. I wanted to use their service - I mean, an e-mail address of would be pretty cool, wouldn't it? However, they need at least 10 people wanting to use a domain they don't currently have to make it worth their while. It's only $20US to sign up and $5US per year for the forwarding. So if any other Kempsters are interested, let them know. But I want Simon!

My research started in 1977 and I have accumulated alot of information since. My branch of the family originated in the 1800's in South London. William Henry Kempster father to Kate Kempster and Doctor William Henry Kempster. Doctor William Henry Kempster was husband to Eliza Mary Ann Tovey and they were parents to nine children from around Battersea. He was a Past Grand Master for the London Lodge of the Freemasons. Their sons were all professionals,(Medical Doctors, Solicitor and Architect). My great grandfather Leonard James Kempster(the Architect), went to Australia circa 1910. He had ten children whose descendants are mostly in the Brisbane area. I have lots to share with anyone who wants to know. I have interest in learning anything about any General Wolfe, Whittaker (an ice skater in North America), Sewell, Kavanagh (Lord Kavanagh) or Christopher Kempster (a Master Mason and assistant to Christopher Wren of St. Paul's Cathedral fame). There are stories floating around in my family that I would be interested in substantiating regarding these names and also distant relatives that would be of great interest in discovering. Any queries would be welcomed and it would be great to be able to piece out the different Kempster branches. I am willing to do what I can to enable this to happen.
